My 20 Ultimate Christmas Songs!

So it’s that time of year again! This blogger definitely did not hit “play” on her Christmas playlist as soon as it hit 00:00am on December 1st.  Nope.  Ok, maybe I did.

Anyway, these are the top 20 festive songs that get played the most for me in the advent period!

I Started With 10…

In ascending order:

#20: East 17 – Stay Another Day

This made #20 because for me it just wouldn’t be Christmas without my cousin and I sending eachother messages taking the piss out of this song/video.  *adopts pained expression and dramatic gangster stance* I TOUCH YOUR FACE WHEN YOU ARE SLEEPING.

#19: The Darkness – Don’t Let The Bells End

One of those Christmas songs that you like to forget exists, but when it comes on you end up putting on a ridiculous falsetto to join in.

#18: Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews – Baby It’s Cold Outside

Because this Welsh duo are brilliant and the video is fantastically creepy.

#17: Bebe Rexha – Santa Baby

I LOVE this woman’s voice! Her cover of Santa Baby is just so sultry 50s siren, seriously.

#16: Al Green – The Christmas Song

My favourite version of this song! It makes me feel all cosy!

#15: The Pogues – Fairytale of New York

Kareoke classic! This song will forever remind me of going out at Christmas with my uni friends in 4th year, drunken folk dancing and terrible singing.

#14: The Waitresses – Xmas Wrapping.

You mean you forgot cranberries too?  This is my cheesy-yet-loveable rap for the holiday period.  It’s such a single-girl track!

#13: Cliff Richard – Mistletoe and Wine

If you are questioning my inclusion of this song, I have included the video. Just wait for his dancing.

#12: Paul McCartney – Wonderful Christmas Time

Reminds me of cosy mulled wine times before singing carols in our town’s marketplace. A definite classic!

#11: Wizzard – I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday

A definite classic.  Plus the video includes some stellar fancy dress, incredible miming, and a young Chris Evans of Radio 2 fame.

#10: Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas Is You

The Kareoke classic # 2. Such a dance-y, feelgood song!

#9: Wham! – Last Christmas

Just look at the hairstyles on that…

#8: Jona Lewie – Stop The Cavalry

Instant Christmas classic! Fun tip: wait until you’ve overdone it on the sherry and try and march throughout the entire song.  It will add a special something to your day.

#7: Elton John – Step Into Christmas

This song is so festive and jolly! It always makes me feel Christmassy on dark nights with twinkling lights.

#6: Greg Lake – I Believe In Father Christmas

I love this song! It’s very comforting, but I once had it stuck in my head through a GCSE English exam.  In summer.  The exam was about motorbike racing and it was a very long couple of hours for me.

#5: Shakin’ Stevens – Merry Christmas Everyone

In the words of a drunk guy in a bar, TUNE MATE! This is one of my favourites for sure.
#4: Band Aid – Do They Know It’s Christmas

The original and the best! I love this video too, with all its jet-lagged pop legends stumbling around.  Also that bit where the guy from Status Quo is checking out one of Bananarama and forgets he’s on camera.  Classic.

#3: Bony M – Mary’s Boy Child

I love this song and I love the guy’s dancing.  That is all.

#2: Mel and Kim – Rocking Around The Christmas Tree

I feel like a spare bit of holly – green and surrounded by pricks.  Truer words have never been spoken.

#1: Slade – Merry Xmas Everyone

Oh come on, don’t act all surprised. After all – IT’S CHRIIIIIIISTMASSSSSSS!

What are your faves?

Hope everyone’s ok out there!
BONUS TRACK

Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker.

The cartoon version is my fave Christmas film (aside from Love Actually).
